The Brain institute has a new neurochemistry laboratory and is
currently developing a neurophysiology laboratory. The central
focus of research is to use the positive effects of extreme
conditions such as hypothermia to improve survival from brain
injury as a result of stroke or trauma. Hypothermia is a clinical
condition of abnormally low body temperature generally
characterized by a core body temperature of 35 degree Celcius or
less. Our BrainLab focuses on the neurochemistry under
conditions of hypothermia and brain injury. The neurochemistry
laboratory was named DeVries BrainLab on Dec. 2004, to
acknowledge the enormous support from Prof. George DeVries
for training and equipment. Prof. George DeVries is the
President of the American Society of Neurochemistry (ASN).
Small grant support from the International Society of
Neurochemistry (ISN) facilitated personnel training. There is
ongoing effort towards capacity building in basic technologies for
neurochemistry and molecular biology including Polymerase
Chain Reaction (PCR), Spectrophotometry, Electrophoresis,
Proteomics, immunohistochemistry and Fluorescence
microscopy. International collaborations are planned with
established laboratories worldwide.
